Bag Ladies shun plastic bags!

Traders in Heben Bridge (Home of Green ISP) voted by a two-thirds majority to ban them from its streets after a sustained campaign by five women who affectionately became known as the "bag ladies".

This effectively means that in around six weeks, people choosing to shop in Hebden Bridge will need their own string, cotton or paper bags to do their shopping.

Anyone who forgets, will be able to buy potato starch carriers from the shops.

Britain is sinking under a tide of rubbish. Our environment is at risk as landfill sites reach maximum capacity.

Plastic bags are among the worst form of rubbish because they are not biodegradable. They blow freely in the wind and quickly become festooned in trees, hedges and shrubbery quickly turning areas into eysores.
